In short

  • The VIN is a 17-character code on the dashboard, the driver's door jamb and the title.
  • All three must match: a mismatch is a red flag.
  • Check open recalls for free on nhtsa.gov with the VIN.
  • Recall repairs are free at a franchised dealer, even on a used car.
  • Some recalls are serious (airbags, fuel leaks): ask for them to be done before you buy.

Where to find the VIN and what it means

  • Dashboard, at the bottom of the windshield on the driver's side.
  • Driver's door jamb sticker.
  • Title and registration, and often the insurance card.

The 17 characters encode the manufacturer, the model, the engine, the model year (10th character) and the plant. Online decoders read them for free.

Check open recalls on nhtsa.gov

  1. Go to the recalls page of nhtsa.gov.
  2. Enter the VIN.
  3. Read the result: “0 unrepaired recalls” or the list of open campaigns with a description of the risk.

The lookup covers safety recalls from major manufacturers over the last 15 years. It doesn't cover non-safety service campaigns, which you can ask a dealer about.

What to do with an open recall

Recall repairs are free at a franchised dealer of the brand, whoever owns the car. Ask the seller to have them done, or check parts availability yourself before you buy.

Take open recalls seriously: some concern airbags, brakes or fire risks. The Carvizia report lists the model's recalls from the NHTSA database.
